Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a term that gets thrown around a lot. But what does it actually mean? Well, AI just refers to machines that can perform tasks that would usually need human brains to do. These tasks include learning, problem-solving, understanding languages, and recognizing patterns. The goal of AI is to make machines as smart as humans, or perhaps even smarter.
But even though we’re making some machines that can ‘talk’ and ‘understand’ our commands, we’re far from reaching the point where a machine can understand us the way another human would. Current AI technology can mimic human language pretty well, but as of now there’s not a machine out there that can truly understand the feelings or the meanings behind our words or actions. Unless advances of some sort are made in the technology, we’re faced with the reality that the advanced devices we communicate with are not environment-conscious, empathetic, or entirely capable of understanding what we truly mean.
A simple example is our interaction with voice-controlled AI helpers like Siri or Alexa. These devices can understand words and phrases we use, and follow through with the commands we make. However, if you think about the bigger picture, they don’t really comprehend what’s going on in our lives, or what those words and phrases mean to us personally. A human friend would understand when you’re having a bad day, but a machine can’t empathize with our feelings.
The distinction between AI understanding us versus imitating us is an important one to keep in mind. While AI can become more sophisticated and functional, the evolution of technology may never reach a point where machines really understand us. However, machines have already made our lives a lot easier and more organized by taking on tasks that free up our time. If we appreciate the AI for what it is, an invaluable tool for aiding our productivity and efficiency, we should embrace technological advancements for all they have to offer.
As AI develops, we also need to remember that understanding is a very human quality. It requires not only knowing what is being said or done, but also understanding the feelings and intentions behind those actions. AI can mimic human responses really well, but that doesn’t mean they can truly understand us. So let’s value our human interactions and appreciate artificial intelligence for what it is—a tool, not a substitute for human understanding.
