Did you ever wonder about how our complex, modern societies manage on a day-to-day basis? The truth is, it usually all boils down to a sophisticated program known as an Algorithm. Algorithms, in simple terms, are just a set of instructions that tell a computer what to do.

There are Algorithms for almost everything, from finding your quickest route to the grocery store, to figuring out the best way to sort your clothes. Algorithms are becoming so intelligent that they can even predict what you might want to buy next, or what movie you’ll enjoy the most. They do this by studying patterns, or by learning from past results.

The clever algorithms that recommend movies or products actually make use of something called ‘Machine Learning.’ Machine Learning is just a fancy way of saying that the computer program learns by itself. It’s like when you try to solve a Rubik’s cube: the more you practice, the better you become. Likewise, these algorithms analyze heaps of data and grow smarter with experience.

But, is this all good? Not really. Just like everything in the world, there are pros and cons. On the positive side, these Algos simplify a lot of things and save us an astonishing amount of time. Trying to sort through all your emails manually? Simply impossible, but with an Algorithm, it’s a piece of cake. Want the quickest route to a location, amidst traffic? Ask the Algorithm.

But they also bring problems. Ever notice how people all over the world are becoming more and more alike? Many blame it on Algorithms. These programs are making decisions for us, narrowing our choices and influencing our likes and dislikes. Sometimes, they even make mistakes, like suggesting a product you have no interest in.

At the end of the day, too much or too little of anything can be harmful. It’s great that we have powerful algorithms that can handle heaps of data, make our lives easier and allow us time to do what we love. However, we need to be aware of the challenges they present and ensure they are used ethically, responsibly and for the benefit of all. We don’t want to end up living in an Algorithm-controlled world, do we?
