Scientists have just made an exciting discovery that could potentially spare many live coral reefs from being destroyed.
Coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate. In fact, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has declared this event as the third ever global coral bleaching event. This is a huge deal as coral reefs are not just beautiful to look at, they are also very important to our ecosystem. They are home to many species of fish and other sea creatures. The reefs also provide protection to coastlines from waves and storms.
You are probably wondering what this has got to do with a robot. Well, a robot has been identified as a lifesaver to these coral reefs. A team of scientific geniuses at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia developed a robot to help protect the coral reefs.
This extraordinary robot is named RangerBot and it is specifically designed to track down and kill the crown-of-thorns starfish, a predator that destroys coral reefs. The RangerBot is about 75 centimeters (30 inches) long and it is loaded with innovative technology that allows it to roam the reefs steadily for up to 8 hours.
RangerBot will use state-of-the-art vision abilities to locate its target, the crown-of-thorns starfish. The task is quite challenging as the nasty starfish often hides under rocks or blend in with the coral. But thanks to artificial intelligence, RangerBot can identify the starfish with a stunning 99.4% accuracy.
Once RangerBot spots the crown-of-thorns starfish, it will inject it with a lethal solution that only harms the starfish and not the surrounding marine life. Through this procedure, the robot has the potential to rescue live coral reefs and maintain a balanced ecosystem.
It’s an amazing idea, isn’t it? Utilizing technology for the benefit of the environment. Let’s hope that this type of technology advances and is used to combat many other environmental issues. After all, science and technology are some of the strongest tools we have to protect our planet. Let’s cheer on RangerBot and the enthusiastic scientists behind this project for their extraordinary work!
